What's biting at you?‏

John 3: 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[a] 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”[b]

The children of Israel were hurting and dying because of poisonous snake bites. Moses hung a snake on a pole so that all who looked at it would be healed of the fearsome snake bites. Jesus offered himself to be hung on a pole (the cross) so that sinners could look up and live.
When someone looks worried and anguished we say to them. “What’s eating you?” Why might just as well ask, “What’s biting you?” To those who are not walking in faith and obedience to God there are many painful consequences both for yourself and those who love you.  But to those who know that there is healing in the name of Jesus, he offers us to look upon his painful death on our behalf and receive mercy and comfort.
So we lift up Christ crucified to all who suffer the painful bite of sin that they might look up and see God’s love that heals all wounds.
Amen.
